How to price a cake

  1. Cost the ingredients from the packs you buy: amount used ÷ pack size × pack price, for the sponge, the frosting and every decoration.
  2. Add your time: baking, prep and decorating hours × the hourly rate you want to earn.
  3. Add the per-cake extras: box and board, this cake's share of overhead, and delivery.
  4. Divide by (1 − margin): total cost ÷ 0.70 gives a 30% profit margin.
  5. Divide by the slices for the price per slice.

Example: the 8-inch vanilla cake above uses $14.04 of ingredients, but 3.5 hours at $20 is $70. With the box and overhead it costs $91.54 to make, so a 30% margin means about $131, or $8.17 a slice. Sell it for $65 and you lose money: your hours earn about $12 each, not $20.

Margin vs markup

Margin is profit as a share of the price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. A 30% margin is a 43% markup. Price from margin and you always know what share of each sale you keep.

Cake pricing calculator FAQ

Is this cake pricing calculator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no signup and runs in your browser. Your numbers are not sent anywhere.

Should I include my time in the cake price?

Yes. Your hours are a real cost. Pick the hourly rate you want to earn, and the calculator adds baking, prep and decorating time to the cake's cost before the margin.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A 30% margin is the same as about a 43% markup. This calculator prices from the margin you enter and shows the markup next to it.

How do I price a cake per slice?

Enter how many slices the cake serves. The calculator divides the price of the whole cake by that number, so the price per slice already covers ingredients, time, box and overhead.

Can it cost buttercream and decorations?

Yes. Add frosting, fillings and decorations as ingredient lines, each with the pack you buy and the amount the cake uses.

Can an app cost my cake recipes for me?

Yes. In FoodTechGuru for iPhone you snap a photo of the recipe, paste a link or dictate it, and the app builds the cost card with ingredient prices for your country plus a Google Sheet. New accounts get 15 free credits; one recipe uses one credit. Android is coming.
